NATIONAL NEWS

Supercomputer ‘PARAM ANANTA’

  • On 30 May 2022, ‘PARAM ANANTA’, a supercomputing facility under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) has been commissioned at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN).
  • It is jointly conducted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and implemented by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
  • It has been established under phase 2 of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
  • The new facility will provide a tremendous amount of computational power to the scientific community of IITGN as well as the academic institutions.
  • “Ananta”, the name of the supercomputer, literally means ‘endless’ or ‘limitless.
  • The supercomputer is capable of offering performance of 838 teraflops.

Mumbai International Film Festival

  • On 29 May 2022, Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the 17th edition of Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in Mumbai.

  • Bangladesh has been selected as the ‘Country of Focus’ during the 17th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) to commemorate the Country’s 50 years of Independence.
  • A special package of 11 films from Bangladesh will be presented at the film festival 2022.
  • The films in the ‘Country of Focus’ category from Bangladesh will include the ‘Hasina: A Daughter’s tale’ which represents the person of the iconic political figure and its current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and it was Directed by Piplu R Khan, the film has won critical acclaim internationally.
  • The Best Film of the Festival will receive the Golden Conch award, along with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs.
  • There are several other awards also in other categories from five to one lakh each.
  • The coveted Dr. V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award with a cash award of Rs 10 lakh will also be given during the festival.

Tata Motors signs MoU to Undertake Ford

  • Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEML), a subsidiary of Tata Motors Ltd, and Ford India, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company (US) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Gujarat (GoG).

  • The MoU is for the potential undertaking of Ford’s Indian manufacturing facility including land and buildings, vehicle manufacturing plant, machinery and equipment and for the transfer of all eligible employees by Tata Motors at Sanand, Gujarat.

  • TPEML with the proposed investments, will establish an installed capacity of 300,000 units per year.

India's Largest Gold Reserves

  • The Geological Survey of India (GSI) announced that Bihar has India’s largest gold reserves.
  • As per the Geological Survey of India (GSI), survey has found that around 222.88 million tonnes of gold reserve, including 37.6 tonnes of mineral-rich ore, are present in Jamui district of Bihar.
  • The state government has decided to get permission for exploration of the "country's largest" gold reserve in Jamui district.
  • The state Mines and Geology Department is in consultation with agencies engaged in exploration, including GSI and the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), for exploration of gold reserves in Jamui.

North India’s First Industrial Biotech Park

  • Union science and technology minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated north India’s first industrial biotech park at Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The biotech park would act as a hub for incubation of new ideas.
  • It is also a robust platform to support agri-entrepreneurs, startups, progressive farmers, scientists, scholars and students not only from J&K but from other states.
  • It will carry out research on biodiversity, medicinal and aromatic plants of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and it will also promote green category businesses.
  • The project will be implemented by the council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIM).

 

BANKING

RBI Survey

  • The RBI survey, was conducted in rural, semi-urban, urban and metropolitan areas spanning 28 states and three Union Territories.
  • The survey has been conducted to assess demand for cash as well as denomination preferences at the consumer level.
  • It also attempts to raise awareness among consumers about various security features of the banknotes.
  • According to the Reserve Bank of India survey, People in India mostly prefer the Rs 100 denomination banknotes, while Rs 2,000 are least preferred,
  • Among coins, Rs 5 is most preferred, whereas Re 1 is least preferred.

Bima Ratna plan

  • LIC, India's largest insurer, announced on Friday the launch of Bima Ratna, a non-linked, non-participating, individual savings life insurance plan that combines protection and savings.

  • The LIC's Bima Ratna plan provides financial support to the policyholder's family in the event of the policyholder's untimely death during the policy term.

  • It alos provides periodic payments for the policyholder's survival at set intervals to fulfil various financial demands.
  • The key features of the new plan include Death Benefit, Survival Benefit, Maturity Benefit, Guaranteed Additions, etc,.

V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Dr. V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred to noted author and documentary filmmaker Shri Sanjit Narwekar.

  • The award was presented at the 17th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival of India (MIFF 2022) to commemorate his deep, remarkably diverse and inspiring body of work.

  • The coveted award comprises of cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs, trophy and a citation.
  • Shri Narwekar is a National award-winning film historian, author, publisher and documentary filmmaker with more than four decades of cross-media experience in Journalism, Public Relations, Publishing and Filmmaking.
  • The V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement award is instituted in memory of legendary filmmaker Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre.

World No-Tobacco Day

  • World No-Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed every year on 31 May.

  • It is celebrated to raise awareness about the damage caused by consuming tobacco.
  • The theme for WNTD for the year 2022 is “Protect the environment”.
  • In the year 2022, the WHO has selected Jharkhand for the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) Award.
  • The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987.

 

OBITUTARY

Jockey Lester Piggot

  • Former champion Jockey Lester Piggot, nicked as ‘The Long Fellow’ died at the age of 86.

  • Piggott was regarded as one of the best Flat riders of all time and was honoured in 2019 with a statue at Epsom.

  • He has won the Indian Turf Invention Cup in 1991.
  • He won the Derby record for nine times.

Veteran Journalist Padmanand Jha

  • Padmanand Jha, a senior journalist and a very old member of the club, passed away in Goa at the age of 66.
  • He was the political editor at the Pioneer.
  • He was a member of Outlook's launch team and one of the country's best political journalists and analysts.
  • Padmanand Jha, called as Paddy by his friends and colleagues in journalism.
  • Paddy had worked both for the print media and television channel.
  • He was instrumental in setting up the political bureau of the New Delhi Television (NDTV) when the company started.
