NATIONAL

India-US Dialog on Green energy

  • India and United States colloborate to work towards installing 450GW of renewable energy by 2030.
  • Environment Minister of India Mr. Bhupender Yadav and United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Mr. John Kerry launched India-US Climate Action and Finance Mobilisation Dialogue(CAFMD).
  • It was one among the main aim of India-US agenda 2030 announced at Leaders summit on Climate.
  • This Partnership will provide both countries an opportunity to renew their collaborations on climate change and also address the financing aspects.
  • Currently India’s installed power capacity is projected to be 476GW by 2021-22, and is expected to increase at least 817GW by 2030.

Three Pillars of the CAFMD dialog:

  1. Climate action pillar-Joint proposals to understand and reduce emissions.
  2. Map to achieve 450GW of renewable energy in transporataion, building and industry.
  3. Finance pillar-To attract finance for achieving 450GW.

 

Drop in Inflation marginally

  • India’s retail inflation dipped to 5.3% in august from 5.6% in july.
  • Food price inflation also saw a dip to 3.11% from 4%in July.
  • CPI inflation was at 6.7% in august2020, with the Consumer food price Index rising 9.05% as per National Statistical Office(NSO).

Inflation- It is the rate of increase in prices over a given period of time. Inflation is typically a broad measure, such as the overall increase in prices or the increase in the cost of living in a country.

Types of inflation-

  1. Creeping Inflation
  2. Chronic Inflation
  3. Walking Inflation
  4. Moderate Inflation
  5. Running Inflation
  6. Galloping Inflation
  7. Hyperinflation.

Consumer price index (CPI)- The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure that examines the weighted average of prices of a basket of consumer goods and services.

 

Haryana tops in PM-KUSUM

  • Haryana has capped among all other states in the country in installation of off-grid solar pumps under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahaabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM),
  • They have installed 14,418 pumps against 15,000 sanctioned pumps for the year 2020-21.

PM-KUSUM

  1. It is a centrally sponsored scheme launched in 2019, aimed to install 20 lakh stand alone solar pumps.
  2. Under this scheme, farmers have to bear 40%of the pump’s cost, while the central and state governments subsidize the remaining 60%for solar pumps that have a capacity of up to 10 HP.
  3. In North Eastern States, Sikkim, J&K, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep and A&N Islands, CFA of 50%, State Government subsidy 30%, Remaining 20% by the farmer.

Chhattishgar launches ‘Millet Mision’

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has announced the launch of ‘Millet Mission’.
  • It aims to provide proper price rates to farmers for minor cereal crops.
  • Chhattisghar govt has inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR), Hyderabad to achieve the millet mission.
  • Odisha already launched its own millet mission.

Types of millets:

 

  1. ​Ragi or Finger Millet
  2. ​Jowar or Sorghum
  3. ​Bajra or Pearl Millet
  4. ​Rajgira or Amaranth
  5. ​Kangni or Foxtail millet.

Additional fact: Rajasthan is the highest millet producing state in  India, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.

INTERNATIONAL

Groundsheel report published by World bank

  • The report published  examined the impacts of slow onset of climate change, such as water scarcity, devreasing crop productivity and increasing sea levels.
  • This could lead to 216 million of climate migrants by 2050.
  • As per this report, the most vulnerable region would be Sub Saharan dessert due to desertification, fragile coastline and population dependence on agriculture, which would approximately see 86 million migrants.

Israeli firm unevils armed robot

  • A remote controlled armed robot to patrol battle zones, track infiltrators was presented by an Israeli firm “REX MKII’’.
  • It is a four wheel drive operated by an electronic tablet.
  • It can be equipped with two machine gun, cameras and sensors.
  • The Israeli military is currently using similar small sized robots called’JAGUAR’ to patrol the border with Gaza strip.

North Korea tests new long range cruise missile

  • North Korea successfully tested its newly developed long range cruise missile.
  • It is capable of hotting a target 1500Km away.
