WADA Athlete Biological Passport Symposium- 2022

  • India will host the 3rd WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) Symposium- 2022” in New Delhi from 12 October to 14 October 2022.
  • The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur will address the opening session of the Symposium.
  • It was organised by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL).
  • The main aim is to fight against the unauthorized use of performance enhancing drugs (Dope) by the athletes in sports.
  • The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in 1999 as an international independent agency composed and funded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and governments of the world.

NMDC Signs MoU with RailTel

  • Mining major National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) and RailTel Corporation of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding for covering NMDC's ICT and Digital Transformation services at their corporate offices and mining premises.

  • This partnership will focus on optimum utilization of resources and will pave the way for a robust digital transformation in the mining sector.

  • RailTel will provide consultancy, project management and execution services which will enhance efficiency and transparency.

Eastern and North-Eastern Cooperative Dairy Conclave 2022

  • The Union Minister for Home and Cooperation Shri Amit Shah has inaugurated the Eastern and North-Eastern Cooperative Dairy Conclave 2022 in Gangtok, Sikkim.

  • In another event, Shri Amit Shah unveiled the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Raj Bhavan.

  • The brief function at the Raj Bhawan also witnessed the launch of a documentary on ‘Life of Ganga Prasad’ and a coffee table book ‘Pragati Pathi’ by the union Home Minister.

  • It will work to export the milk product of our cooperative dairy in the world and bring profit to the farmer.
  • The government is committed to increasing this market from 13 lakh crore to 30 lakh crore by 2027.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India -UAE High Level Joint Task Force on Investments

  • The 10th meeting of the UAE-India High Level Joint Task Force on Investments was held in Mumbai on 11 October 2022.
  • It was co-chaired by the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and his counterpart Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
  • The Joint Task Force was established in 2013 to promote trade, investment and economic ties between the UAE and India.
  • The United Arab Emirates is the third largest trading partner of India after the United States and China in 2021-2022.
  • In 2021 – 2022, total trade between India and the UAE was $72.8 billion, with India’s exports of $28 billion and imports of $44.8 billion.

World Geospatial Information Congress

  • The 2nd edition of United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (UNWGIC) is being held in Hyderabad, India from 10 October to 14 October 2022 by the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM).
  • It is organized by the Government of India through the Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • It is a global event bringing all stakeholders together to address at the highest level and ensure that geospatial information has broad utility in sustainable social, economic and environmental development.
  • The theme of the congress is ‘Geo-Enabling the Global Village: No one should be left behind’.
  • Geospatial technology is an emerging field of study that includes Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
  • It enables us to obtain data that is in reference to the Earth and used for analysis, modelling, simulation and visualization.

 

ECONOMY

IMF Cuts India's Growth Rate for the Year 2022-23

  • World Economic Outlook released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 11 October 2022 has cut the expected growth rate of India to 6.1% in 2022-23.

  • The report also mentioned that still it will be the fastest growing major economy in the world.

  • For the next year 2023, India has been projected to grow at 6.1%.
  • However, the IMF still expects the Indian economic growth to be highest amongst the major economies in the world ahead of China (4.4%), Saudi Arabia (3.7%) and Nigeria (3%).

 

SPORTS

FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup 2022

  • FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2022 started on 11 October 2022.
  • India will host the tournament for the first time at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
  • This is the seventh edition of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
  • The tournament will take place from 11 October to 30 October 2022, in Bhubaneshwar, Navi Mumbai and Goa.

Japan Open 2022

  • American tennis player Taylor Fritz defeated US player Frances Tiafoe in the final (7–6), (7–6) to win the singles tennis title at the 2022 Japan Open.
  • It was Fritz’s fourth career title and third in the 2022 season.
  • He is the 10th American to win the Japan Open Title.
  • It was the 47th edition of the Japan Open Championships, held in Tokyo.

 

AWARDS & PRIZES

World Skills Competition 2022

  • Praveen Kumar Giri, won the silver medal for India in Water Technology at the World Skills Competition 2022 held at Stuttgart, Germany.

  • Praveen Kumar Giri is a student in Mechanical Engineering of C.V. Raman Global University Odisha.

  • He is the second Indian to win a medal in the world skill competition after Aswastha Narayana won the gold medal in water technology at the 2019 event in Kazan, Russia.

  • The Gold Medal was won by Singapore, Silver by India and Bronze was won by Japan.

 

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

Chiefs of High Courts

  • The Union government on 11 October 2022, notified the appointment of three new chief justices in different high courts following the recommendation of the Supreme Court.
  • Bombay high court judge PB Varale was appointed as the chief justice of the Karnataka high court.
  • Justice Pankaj Mithal, the current chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh high court was appointed as the new chief justice of the Rajasthan high court.
  • Justice AM Magrey, was appointed as the new chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh high court.
  • Under article 217 of the Indian constitution the Chief Justice of a High Court is appointed by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.

International Girl Child Day

  • International Girl Child Day is celebrated every year on 11 October.

  • The day focuses on the need to address the challenges faced by girls, empower them and promote the fulfilment of their rights.

  • According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the day was celebrated by the United Nations (UN) which aims to stand with girls who are more vulnerable to discrimination and violence than boys.
  • The theme for the year 2022 is ‘Our time is now—our rights, our future’.
  •  The day was first celebrated on 11 October 2012.

 

OBITUTARY

Popular ‘Villupattu’ Exponent Subbu Arumugam

  • Popular ‘Villupattu’ exponent Subbu Arumugam, who enthralled audiences for about four decades passed away in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was at the age of 94.

  • He was an Indian musician, writer and Villupattu theater art exponent.

  • He published 15 books containing Villu Pattu narratives, songs, short stories and novels such as Veera Pandia Kattabomman.
  • In 2021, he was awarded India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri in the Arts and Literature category.
  • He was awarded the Kalaimamani title in 1975 by the Tamil Nadu for excellence in the field of art and literature.
