MDL Launches ‘Taragiri’

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) launched the third Stealth Frigate of Project 17A ‘Taragiri’ on 11 September 2022.

  • The vessel has an approximate launch weight of 3510 Tons.

  • The ship is designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house design organisation through Bureau of Naval Design.
  • The indigenously designed ‘Taragiri’ will have state-of-the-art weapons, sensors, an advanced action information system, an integrated platform management system, world-class modular living spaces, sophisticated power distribution system and a host of other advanced features.
  • It will be fitted with supersonic surface-to-surface missile system.
  • The ship is expected to be delivered by 2025.

National Defense MSME Conclave

  • The two-day National Defense MSME Conclave and Exhibition began in Kota, Rajasthan today.
  • Defense equipment including T-90 and BMP-2 tanks, artillery guns, various types of sniper and machine guns and military bridges are being displayed in the exhibition.
  • Defense Conclave and Exhibition is being organized for the first time in Rajasthan.
  • The conclave will be formally inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Minister of State for Defense Ajay Bhatt.

Cheetah Re-introduction Project

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Cheetah Re-introduction project on 17 September 2022.

  • He disclosed this at the inaugural meeting of the national Conference for the Zoo Directors held in Bhubaneswar on 10 September 2022.

  • For the purpose, Cheetah will be brought from Namibia.

  • This is for the first time that the Cheetah is being re-introduced after its disappearance from India in the 1950s.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

World Dairy Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit IDF WDS 2022, at India Expo Centre and Mart, Greater Noida on 12 September 2022.

  • It is a congregation of global and Indian dairy stakeholders including industry leaders, experts, farmers and policy planners.

  • The theme for the Summit is ‘Dairy for Nutrition and Livelihood’.
  • The last such Summit was held in India about half a century ago in 1974.
  • Around 1500 participants from 50 countries are expected to participate in International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit 2022.
  • The summit will also help Indian dairy farmers to gain exposure about the global best practices.

RBI Imposes Penalties on 3 Entities

  • The Reserve Bank of India has imposed penalties on three entities for non-compliance with regulatory norms.

  • A penalty of Rs 36 lakhs has been imposed on Industrial Bank of Korea for non-compliance with certain Know Your Customer (KYC) norms.

  • A penalty of Rs. 59.10 lakh has been imposed on Woori Bank.
  • A fine of Rs. 12.35 lakh has been imposed on Indiabulls Commercial Credit Limited.

US Open Women’s Singles 2022

  • World Number one Iga Swiatek won the women's title at the 2022 US Open tennis grand slam.

  • She defeated Ons Jabeur from Tunisia 6-2, 7-6.

  • Swiatek claimed her third Grand Slam trophy after she won the 2020 and 2022 French Open.

Italian F1 Grand Prix

  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Formula One Italian Grand Prix on 11 September 2022.
  • Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes George Russell came at the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
  • It was Verstappen’s 11th win in 16 races in 2022.
  • It was also Verstappen’s maiden Italian GP win.
  • He had also won the Dutch F1 Grand Prix.
  • He has won a total of 31 races.

Australia Captain Aaron Finch Announces to Retire

  • Australia’s captain Aaron Finch, announced his retirement from one-day international cricket after Australia’s third and final ODI against New Zealand.
  • Finch will continue to be the captain of the Australian cricket team for T20.
  • Finch has scored 5,401 runs in the ODI format with an average of close to 40 and 17 centuries.
  • He played 145 ODI matches out of which 54 were as a captain.
  • In 2018, he became the first player to reach 900 rating points on the official International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 rankings.

  • Pavan C. Lall is the author of the book titled ‘Foreign Mettle: Nrupender Rao and the Pennar story.’

  • It will release on 12 September 2022.

  • Pavan C. Lall is a Mumbai based author and journalist who has written for Fortune Magazine’s Indian edition.

  • He is also a winner of the Citi Journalistic Excellence Award in 2016.

National Forest Martyrs Day

  • National Forest Martyrs Day 2022 is observed every year on 11 September.

  • National Forest Martyrs Day is observed to honour those who gave their lives to preserve India's forests, jungles and wildlife.

  • It is also commemorated to highlight the significance of trees.

  • The observance of the National Forest Martyrs is marked by several events aimed at creating awareness about protecting forests and the environment.

World Suicide Prevention Day

  • World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on 10 September.

  • The day is celebrated in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003.

  • The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to host World Suicide Prevention Day.

 

OBITUTARY

Legendary Telugu Actor Krishnam Raju

  • Legendary Telugu Actor and former Union Minister Krishnam Raju Garu passed away. He was at the age 83.

  • Raju acted in more than 180 films and was also a recipient of five Filmfare south awards as well as three Nandi awards.

  •  His most famous works include Jeevana Tarangalu, Krishnaveni and Bhakta Kannappa among others.

  • He also served as the Union Minister for State in various ministries in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led BJP government in the centre between 2000 and 2002.

Archaeologist B B Lal

  • Noted Archaeologist Braj Basi Lal, who led an excavation at the Ramjanmabhoomi site in the mid-1970s passed away.

  • He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award in 2021.

  • He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2000.

  • Considered India’s Senior most archaeologist, he was actively involved in archaeological research and writing till the age of 100.
