President Launched Startup Platform ‘herSTART’

  • President Droupadi Murmu launched ‘herSTART’, which is a start-up platform for women entrepreneurs created by Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.
  • President Murmu also laid the foundation stone virtually from Gujarat University for various projects related to education and tribal development at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
  • The President mentioned that there are around 450 start-ups in the Gujarat University campus.
  • She informed that the university also actively supports over 125 female-led start-ups.

Fifth Assembly of International Solar Alliance

  • International Solar Alliance’s Fifth Assembly will be held in New Delhi from 17 October to 20 October 2022.
  • Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister R.K Singh will preside over the Assembly.
  • The Assembly is the apex decision-making body of ISA, in which each Member country is represented.
  • India holds the office of the President of the ISA Assembly. Ministers, missions, and delegates from 109 Member and Signatory Countries will participate in this meeting.
  • India's pace of Energy Transition is the fastest in the world and International Solar Alliance is absolutely essential for the planet's goal of Energy Transition.

RBI Introduces Internal Ombudsman Mechanism

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has urged Credit Information Companies to designate an internal ombudsman (IO) by 01 April 2023, to enhance the effectiveness of its grievance redressal systems.
  • Only complaints that the CIC has already reviewed but rejected in whole or in part will be handled by the IO.
  • Direct complaints from complainants or members of the public will not be handled by it.
  • The internal ombudsman will, report administratively to the Managing Director or Chief Executive Officer of the CIC and functionally to the Board.

 

ECONOMY

No Charge for RuPay Credit Card use on UPI

  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that there will be no charge for RuPay credit card use on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for transactions up to ₹2,000.

  • RuPay credit card has been operational for the last four years and all major banks are enabled and are issuing incremental cards for both commercial and retail segments.

  • RBI has approved linking of RuPay Credit Cards to UPI, which will provide a seamless, digitally enabled credit card lifecycle experience for the customers.

Irani Cup 2022

  • Rest of India defeated 2019-20 Ranji Trophy champion Saurashtra to win their 29th Irani Cup.

  • It was the Rest of India’s 29th Irani Trophy title.

  • Irani Cup is a test match format cricket tournament in India.

  • It is played annually between the incumbent Ranji Trophy winner and the Rest of India cricket team.

 

AWARDS & PRIZES

SASTRA Ramanujan Prize 2022

  • Yunqing Tang was conferred with SASTRA Ramanujan Prize 2022.
  • Tang was given the prize for her works in arithmetic and geometry of modular curves and Shimura varieties.
  • Yunqing Tang is a Chinese-born Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
  • SASTRA Ramanujan Prize will be conferred to Tang at the International Conference on Number Theory, which will be held from 20 December to 22 December 2022 at SASTRA University.
  • The prestigious award was instituted by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) in the year 2005. It includes a cash prize of USD 10,000.

Nobel Literature Prize

  • The French author Annie Ernaux has been awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in literature.

  • She was awarded for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory.

  • Ernaux is the first French writer to win the Nobel since Patrick Modiano in 2014.

  • Ernaux was born in 1940 in France. Her first book, Cleaned Out in 1974 was an autobiographical novel.

UNHCR Nansen Refugee Awards

  • The former German chancellor Angela Merkel received the 2022 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award.
  • The announcement was made by the UN Refugee Agency on 04 October 2022.
  • Merkel will be awarded the UN refugee agency prize for ‘political courage” and decisive action taken during her tenure to safeguard people forced to flee.
  • The award was created in 1954 in honour of the first UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Fridtjof Nansen.

Devendra Lal Memorial Medal 2022

  • Roxy Mathew Koll, a scientist at the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), received the 2022 Devendra Lal Memorial Medal.
  • Koll was selected for his outstanding research in Earth and space sciences. He will also be conferred as a Fellow of the AGU.
  • The award is given by the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
  • AGU is a non-profit organisation that annually recognises a select number of individuals as part of its honours and recognition programme in Earth and space sciences.
  • The medal is named in honour of professor Devendra Lal, a distinguished geophysicist whose work spanned diverse areas of the Earth and space sciences.

New Director General Ordnance

  • 1985-batch Officer of Indian Ordnance Factory Service (IOFS), Sanjeev Kishore takes over as the Director General Ordnance (C&S).
  • He will replace M K Garg.
  • Before taking over the charge of DGO (C&S), he was the Additional Director of General Ordnance at the Directorate of Ordnance (Coordination & Services), Kolkata.
  • He has been awarded Santu Sahaney Memorial Shield and Ayudh Bhushan award for his meritorious services in enhancing defense production.

World Teachers’ Day

  • World Teachers’ Day or International Teachers’ Day is observed every year on 05 October.

  • This day is celebrated to thank and honour teachers for their contributions to their students.

  • The theme for the year 2022 is ‘The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers’.

  • United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 05 October to be World Teachers’ Day.
