NATIONAL NEWS

India’s first Bullet Train

  • Surat is set to become the first station to be ready in Mumbai - Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor.

  • The MAHSR corridor will cover 12 stations in total- Surat, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, Sabarmati, Bilimora, Bharuch, Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi stations.

  • The Maximum Design Speed- of the train would be 350 km per hour and the Maximum Operating speed would be 320 km per hour.

  • The project is being implemented by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL).

  • The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train will run using Japanese Shinkansen Technology.

Cochin Port Trust – Green Initiatives

  • Under the Maritime Vision 2030 initiative for the improvement of green ports and green shipping in the region, the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) has taken up a series of green initiatives

  • This initiative has aimed at shifting its operations completely to solar power by 2030.

  • The schemes to be implemented are: (1) Solar-powered cranes, (2) shore-based electricity supply to all ships.

  • These initiatives are in parallel with International Maritime Organization’s 2030 Decarbonization Strategy and 2050 Greenhouse Gases Strategy.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Bangladesh to Purchase Railway Wagons from India

  • The Bangladesh railways on 6th February 2022, signed agreement in Dhaka with India to procure 420 broad-gauge wagons from India.

  • The agreement was signed between the project director of Bangladesh railways Mizanur Rahman and the Hindustan Engineering and Industries Limited.

  • The agreement worth 231 crore Taka (currency of Bangladesh) will be implemented with the joint funding of the Government of Bangladesh and Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Rolling Stock Operation Improvement Project.

ICC U-19 World Cup: India Lifts a Record

  • India won the ICC Under-19 World Cup for the 5th time marking a record in the history.

  • India beat England by four wickets in the final match held at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

  • India’s Raj Angad Bawa was announced Player of the Match of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022.

  • Earlier, India had won the U19 World Cup in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2018.

 

APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS

Head of Norway Central Bank

  • The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg will become Norway’s New Central Bank chief at the end of the year.

  • The appointment comes amid escalating tensions between the Weas and Russia.

  • Stoltenberg will be in charge of setting interest rates and manage financial stability as well as overseeing Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest with assets of $1.4 trillion.

Controller General of Accounts (CGA)

  • The Government of India has appointed Sonali Singh to hold the additional charge of the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), under the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.

  • She has been appointed in place of Dipak Dash, who superannuated on January 31, 2022.

UGC Chairman

  • Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar was appointed as Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC).

  • He has been the vice chancellor of JNU since 2016

  • He has been appointed as the chairman for a period of 5 years or till he attains the age of 65 years.

  • He succeeds Prof D P Singh who resigned upon attaining 65 years of age.

International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation

  • International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female is observed on 6th February globally.

  • This day is sponsored by the United Nations for their efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation.

  • It was first introduced in 2003.

  • This year theme of International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female: Accelerating Investment to End Female Genital Mutilation.

  • A short biography of Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra has titled ‘Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra’ has been released.

  • The biography was written by Navdeep Singh Gill.

  • Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal in Javelin Throw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

  • The biography was released by the chairperson of Punjab Kala Parishad “Surjit Patar” and President of Punjabi Sahit Akademi “Lakhwinder Singh Johal”.

 

OBITUARY

Legend Playback Singer, Lata Mangeshkar

  • Bharat Ratna awardee Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 due to multiple organ failures.

  • She was born in 1929, at Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

  • She gained her honorific titles such as: The Nightingale of India, Voice of the Millennium and Queen of Melody.

  • She was the recipient of three National Film Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, two Filmfare Special Awards, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and many more.

  • In 1974, she was one of the first Indian playback singers to ever perform at Royal Albert Hall, London.
