NATIONAL NEWS

Floating Border Outposts

  • Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated three floating Border Outposts (BOP) on the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal to protect the inaccessible areas of the Sundarbans.
  • The floating Border Outposts (BOP) Sutlej, Kaveri and Narmada have been built by the Koch Shipyard.
  • The Outpost has adequate arrangements to prevent both infiltration and smuggling.

Floating Boat Ambulance

  • Shri. Amit Shah also flagged off the floating Boat Ambulance.
  • The services commenced to provide medical assistance in the inaccessible area of Sundarbans from Saheb Khali (West Bengal) to Shamsher Nagar (Bihar).

Maitri Sangrahalaya (Friendship Museum)

  • Shri. Amit Shah also laid down the foundation stone of the ‘Friendship Museum at Haridaspur in West Bengal.
  • In 1970s, horrific human rights violations were committed in Bangladesh.
  • At that time BSF and the Indian Army defended human rights in that area with great valour and helped in the creation of Bangladesh.
  • On the occasion of the golden jubilee year of the creation of Bangladesh, the Friendship Museum will be established at a cost of Rs. 8 Crore.

Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme

  • Shri. Pashupati Kumar Paras, Union Minister of Food Processing Industries launched three One District One Product (ODOP) brands under the PMFME Scheme in New Delhi.
  • The Scheme (PMFME) was launched under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
  • It is a centrally sponsored scheme.
  • It aims to enhance the competitiveness of existing individual micro-enterprises in the unorganized segment of the food processing industry.
  • It aims to promote formalization of the sector and provide support to Farmer Producer Organizations, Self Help Groups, and Producers Cooperatives along their entire value chain.
  • It is being implemented by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

Mukti-matrika Programme

  • Mukti-matrika (‘Freedom as Mother’) is a cultural programme, organized by the Ministry of Culture at the Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata.
  • It will consist of a dance performance by eminent Odissi dancer Smt. Dona Ganguly and her troupe, Diksha Manjari, and a recital by the noted musician duo, Sourendro-Soumyojit.
  • UNESCO has recently accorded the Intangible Cultural Heritage status to Kolkata's Durga Puja festivities.

Yeshasvini Health Scheme

  • Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, recently announced the re-introduction of Yeshaswini health scheme for farmers.
  • Under this scheme, quality medical facilities will be made available to farmer families of rural areas and a sum of ₹300 crore will be provided by the State Government.
  • Yeshaswini, launched in 2003 by the State Government, was one of the largest self-funded healthcare schemes in the country.
  • Covering 823 defined surgical procedures, the scheme enabled rural beneficiaries to avail cashless treatment costing up to ₹2 lakh and ₹2.5 lakh according to the subscriber’s annual contribution.
  • About 40 lakh members of cooperative bodies in urban areas were eligible under this scheme.

AWARDS & PRIZES

World Food Prize

  • Cynthia Rosenzweig, an agronomist and climatologist, was awarded the $2,50,000 prize in recognition of her innovative modelling of the impact of climate change on food production.
  • She is a NASA climate research scientist who has spent much of her career explaining how global food production must adapt to a changing climate.
  • She is a senior research scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and serves as adjunct senior research scientist at the Columbia Climate School at Columbia University, both in New York.

World Food Prize

  • It is an international award recognizing the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world.
  • It is now administered by the World Food Prize Foundation.

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

Alkesh Kumar Sharma

  • Alkesh Kumar Sharma assumed charge as Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).
  • He is an Indian Administrative Services Officer of 1990 batch, from Kerala cadre.
  • He has earlier served as Additional Secretary and Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India.

Sanjeev Kapoor

  • Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor assumed the appointment of Director General (Inspection and Safety) [DG(I&S)] of Indian Air Force at Air HQ New Delhi.
  • The Air Officer is a recipient of Vayu Sena Medal and Ati Vishist Seva Medal.

Sudarshan Venu

  • Auto major TVS Motor has elevated Sudarshan Venu as the managing director of the company.
  • He was donning role of the Joint managing director of the company.
  • Sudarshan so far has played a key role towards electrification in TVS and in expanding the Cos reach in the global markets including Asia, Africa, and more recently in Europe.

SPORTS

Deaflympics, 2022

  • Dhanush Srikanth struck gold in the men's 10m air rifle competition on the ongoing 24th Deaflympics at Caxias do Sul, Brazil.
  • Shourya Saini with a bronze, finishing behind the Silver medalist Kim Woo Rim of Korea.
  • India is currently placed 8th on the medals table with 2 gold and 1 bronze medal.
  • Ukraine tops the standings currently with 19 gold, six silver and 13 bronze medals.
