India’s First ‘Night Sky Sanctuary’

  • Bengaluru- based Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) will establish a first-of-its kind in India ‘Dark Sky Reserve’ in Ladakh.

  • Under the project, a first-ever ‘Night Sky Sanctuary’ will also be built in Hanle, Ladakh as part of the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.

  • The sanctuary will be one the highest-located sites in the world for optical, gamma ray and infrared telescopes and the reserve will boost astro tourism in India.

  • A tripartite memorandum of understanding was signed among the UT administration, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) for launching the dark space reserve.

First NEP 2020 Compliant Law School

  • The Institute of Integrated Learning in Management (IILM) University, Greater Noida has launched the first National Education Policy (NEP 2020) compliant law school in India.
  • It has been launched to strengthen the legal education system of India.
  • The school has been launched with the approval of the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the recognition of the Bar Council of India (BCI).
  • It is also a great place to study for those who aspire to be civil servants, Judge Advocate Generals (JAG) in the Indian Army, corporate lawyers and in-house counsels.

Quad Senior Officials’ Meeting

  • The Quad group meeting will be hosted by India in New Delhi with Japan, U.S and Australia on 05 September and 06 September 2022.
  • The Quad meeting is the first such “Senior Officers Meeting” (SOM) to be held after tensions rose between China and Taiwan.
  • The meeting will review progress of initiatives that were discussed during the Quad summit in Tokyo in May 2022.
  • The officials of the Ministry of External Affairs will follow the Quad meeting with an India-US 2+2 “inter-sessional” meeting, with U.S Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu leading the American delegation to discuss bilateral issues.
  • The meeting will also be attended by officials of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Direction General of the Foreign Policy Bureau from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Global Startup Challenge ‘VentuRISE’

  • Karnataka government launched the global startup challenge ‘VentuRISE’, which aims to support startups in manufacturing and sustainability related sectors.

  • VentuRISE will be a part of the Global Investors Meet-Invest Karnataka 2022, which will be held in Bengaluru.
  • The winners of the challenge will get a cash prize of USD 100,000 and access to customers and mentoring sessions.

HDFC Bank Introduces New SMS Banking Facility

  • The private sector lender HDFC Bank introduced a new SMS banking facility for its customers.

  • With the new SMS banking facility, customers can now check account balances & summaries, apply for loans, manage credit cards, apply for cheque book requests, generate account statements and more.

  • Customers no longer need to remember or type lengthy pre-defined keywords as HDFC Bank's new SMS facility is integrated with AI technology.
  • In order to get started with the new SMS banking facility of HDFC Bank, customers are required to complete the registration process.

Malaysian Chess Meet

  • Six-year-old Anishka Biyani won the gold medal in the Malaysian Age Group Rapid Chess Championship at Kuala Lumpur on 04 September 2022.

  • Anishka, a first-grade student of Dhirubhai Ambani school, achieved the feat in the Under-6 Open category.

  • She scored four points out of a possible six to clinch the title in the girl’s category.

  • Earlier this year, Anishka also qualified as one of the best under-7 players in the All-India FIDE rating chess tournament held in Yousufguda, Hyderabad.

Dutch F1 Grand Prix

  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Dutch Formula 1 Grand Prix on 04 September 2022.

  • Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc came at the second and third positions respectively.

  • Verstappen has now won 10 of this season’s 15 races.

  • It was his 72nd podium finish and he collected 26 points from this race.

Anthem and Mascot of 36th National Games in Ahmedabad

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 04 September 2022, launched the mascot and the anthem for the 36th National Games in Ahmedabad.

  • The mascot is named as ‘Savaj’ which means cub in Gujarat.

  • While the theme of the anthem of the national games is ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’.

  • The 36th edition of the National Games will be organized between 29 September to 12 October at six cities in Gujarat.

Ramon Magsaysay Awards 2022

  • The Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation (RMAF) announced this year’s awardees in a global announcement ceremony.

  • This year marks the 64th edition. It is regarded as ‘Asia’s Nobel Prize.

  • The 2022 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees are Sotheara Chhim (Cambodia), Bernadette Madrid (Philippines), Tadashi Hattori (Japan) and Gary Bencheghib (Indonesia).

  • Sotheara Chhim is being recognized for “his calm courage in surmounting deep trauma to become his people’s healer”.
  • Tadashi Hattori is being recognized for his simple humanity and extraordinary generosity as a person and a professional.
  • Bernadette J. Madrid is being recognized for “her unassuming and steadfast commitment to noble and demanding advocacy.
  • Gary Bencheghib is being recognized for Emergent Leadership for “his inspiring fight against marine plastic pollution.
  • It is named after Ramon Magsaysay, the third president of the Philippines.

 

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

Executive Chairman of NALSA

  • Justice D Y Chandrachud, a second senior-most judge in the Supreme Court, has been nominated as executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

  • The post was previously held by the Chief Justice of India UU Lalit.

  • After CJI Lalit’s retirement, Justice Chandrachud will take over as the 50th CJI from November 2022.

MD & CEO of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank

  • Krishnan Sankarasubramaniam has appointed as managing director and Chief Executive Officer of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank.
  • Sankarasubramaniam succeeds K V Rama Moorthy and his term would be for a period of three years, which has been approved by the Reserve Bank of India.
  • Prior to this, Sankarasubramaniam was serving Punjab and Sind Bank as its Managing Director and CEO.

National Skyscraper Day

  • National Skyscraper Day is observed every year on 03 September.
  • The Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Louis H. Sullivan, often called the ‘father of modern skyscrapers.
  • Across the globe, skyscrapers have defined people’s vivid imagination and creativity.
  • A skyscraper is a tall habitable building with multiple floors.
  • These high-rise buildings are around 100 meters or 150 meters in height.

 

OBITUTARY

Former Chairman of Tata Sons, Cyrus Mistry

  • Former Tata Sons Chairman and Industrialist Cyrus Mistry passed away in a car accident near Mumbai on 04 September 2022.

  • He was the first non-Indian to lead the Tata Group.

  • He was chosen as the chairman of Tata Sons after Ratan Tata steeped down in 2012.
