India chosen as first Country of Honour ever at Cannes Film Festival

  • Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shri Anurag Thakur announced that India will be the official Country of Honour at the Marche’ Du Film, organized alongside the 75th edition of Cannes Film Festival, in France.
  • It is the first time the Marché du Film has an official Country of Honour, and this special focus will continue annually with different nations in the spotlight at future editions.
  • India is also a Country of Honour at the Cannes Next, under which 5 new Start Ups would be given an opportunity to pitch to the Audio-Visual Industry.

PLASTINDIA 2023

  • Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya launched Plastindia, 2023.
  • PLASTINDIA refers to a series of exhibitions under the Plastindia Foundation, which will hold the 11th International Plastics Exhibition, Conference and Convention from 1st-5th February, 2023 at ITPO Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • The exhibition will provide opportunities for employment generation, facilitate the growth of the Indian plastic industry and make India a hub for sourcing plastic for global needs.

Operation Satark

  • Railway Protection Force (RPF) launches Operation Satark
  • It was launched with an objective of taking action against illicit liquor/FICN/illegal tobacco products/unaccounted gold/cash/precious items/ any other items being transported through railway network for the purpose of tax evasion/smuggling/commission of crime/acts of terror.
  • RPF is an armed force of the union entrusted with the security of railway property, passenger area and passengers.
  • It is the lead security agency in the field of railway security having a pan India reach.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

2nd India-Nordic Summit

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the 2nd India-Nordic Summit.
  • The Prime Minister of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland also participated in the summit.
  • The Summit provided an opportunity to review the progress of the India-Nordic relations since the 1st India-Nordic Summit, which was held in 2018 in Stockholm.

DEFENCE

ALH Mk III

  • Indian Coast Guard commissioned its second Air Squadron, 845 Squadron (CG), at the Coast Guard Air Enclave at Nedumbassery in Kochi.
  • The new Air Squadron, commissioned is equipped with the indigenously developed Advanced Mark III (ALH Mark III) helicopters.
  • Four helicopters have been positioned in Kochi to cover the entire coast of Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

 

SPORTS

Fischer Memorial Title

  • Indian Woman Grandmaster R Vaishali won the Heraklion 2022 - 8th Fischer Memorial chess tournament.
  • She also secured a Grandmaster norm, her second, in the process and gained 20 rating points.
  • Though tied for the title with Israel’s Yoav Milikow, Vaishali was adjudged the champion on superior tie-break count.

 

PERSONALITY IN NEWS

Yenagi Lakshmibai

  • Veteran theatre artist and singer Yenagi Lakshmibai died in Dharwad.
  • She was known for her beauty and melodious voice.
  • She acted in several professional plays and essayed the roles of mythological and historical characters.
  • She won accolades for her portrayal as Kittur Channamma, Hemareddy Mallamma and leading roles in Kurukshetra, Chale Jao, Pathan Pasha and other plays.
  • She acted in the Kannada film Singarevva.
  • The 96-year-old artist was the wife of Yenagi Balappa who died in 2017.
  • Their son, Nataraj Yenagi, who predeceased his parents, was an award-winning actor.

United Nations Award by the Centre for Champion Awards (CCA)

  • The Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBK) have been nominated for the United Nations Award by the Centre for Champion Awards (CCA) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
  • These awards are given for outstanding contributions by the governments to increasing food security.
  • The RBKs had revolutionised the agriculture sector by catering to the farmers’ needs, from supplying seeds to selling their produce.

International Day of the Midwife

  • The International Day of the Midwife (IDM) is celebrated on May 5 each year to focus on the role of midwives and midwifery.
  • Midwifery is skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate care for childbearing women, newborn infants and families across the continuum throughout pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and the early weeks of life.
