NATIONAL NEWS

AFSPA in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh

  • The Centre on Friday extended the application of ‘disturbed area’ under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in 12 districts of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • AFSPA will be extended in 3 districts of Arunachal Pradesh and 9 districts of Nagaland issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The act will come into effect from 01 October 2022 to 30 March 2023.
  • The extension of the AFSPA in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland would facilitate anti-insurgency operations that are being conducted by the security forces.
  • These districts are declared as disturbed area under Section 3 of AFSPA, 1958.

Chhattisgarh Government Launches MGRIP

  • Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel launched Mahatma Gandhi Rural Industrial Park (MGRIP).
  • Under the scheme, cow shelters will be developed as industrial parks.
  • For this, the government has released a budget of Rs 600 crore for the current session.
  • Under this scheme, where people from rural environment will get employment in their home, there will be additional income, while there will also be an environment for better life for the cows.

Union Cabinet Approved a 4 % Hike in Dearness Allowance (DA)

  • Union Cabinet has approved a 4% additional installment of Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief to Central Government employees and pensioners.

  • The move will benefit about 41.85 lakh Central Government employees and 69.76 lakh, pensioners.

  • The Central Government employees and pensioners will become entitled to a higher amount of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) respectively, with effect from July 2022.

  • Serving employees get DA and now its rate will go up to 38 percent from 34 percent.

India’s First Tribal Community-Based Encyclopedia

  • Odisha became the first state to publish an encyclopedia based on tribal communities.

  • The Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Navin Patnaik released the “Encyclopedia of Tribes in Odisha”.

  • Schedule Castes and Scheduled Tribes Research and Training Institute (SCSTRTI) and Odisha State Tribal Museum published the encyclopedia.
  • The main objective is to appraise the old and new, the past and the present cultural description of the tribal community.
  • The encyclopedia consists of 5 edited volumes.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar to Visit New Zealand and Australia

  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will visit New Zealand and Australia from 05 to 11 October 2022.
  • This will be the Minister’s first visit to New Zealand.
  • Both leaders will release India@75 postage stamps to commemorate and showcase Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in New Zealand.
  • Dr. Jaishankar will launch the book ‘Modi@20: Dreams Meet Delivery’.
  • A book showcasing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special bond with the Sikh community ‘Heartfelt – The Legacy of Faith’ will also be released.
  • In Wellington, he will inaugurate the newly constructed building of the High Commission of India.
  • In the second leg of his tour in Australia, the Minister will visit Canberra and Sydney. It will be his second visit to Australia in 2022.
  • He will hold the 13th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue along with his counterpart Penny Wong.

SBI launches 'Gram Seva Program'

  • On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the State Bank of India announced that it will adopt 30 remote villages across India under the 4th phase of the ‘SBI Gram Seva’ program.

  • Under the flagship scheme of the SBI Foundation, the bank will adopt remote villages across Aspirational Districts in Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

  • Launched under the Corporate Social Responsibility of the bank, the program emphasises a comprehensive development of villages by active intervention in areas like education, healthcare, livelihoods, and infrastructure.

  • As of now, the program has adopted 100 villages across 16 States in 3 phases.

 

AWARDS & PRIZES

2022 Nobel Prize in Medicine

  • The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Svante Pääbo for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.
  • It is awarded by the Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute.
  • Through his groundbreaking research, Svante Pääbo established an entirely new scientific discipline and paleogenomics.
  • The prize carries a cash award of 10 million Swedish Kronor (USD 900,000) and will be handed out on 10 December 2022.
  • They are given in the memory of Alfred Nobel, who was a Swedish engineer known for the invention of dynamite. It was first awarded in 1901.

Lifetime Achievement Award by US President

  • Indian-origin, Dr. Vivek Lall has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by US President Joe Biden with the citation of 'With Grateful Recognition'.
  • The citation was given to Dr. Lall by the AmeriCorps, which is a part of the US Government and aims to foster activities that bring Americans closer together to "serve communities."
  • Dr. Lall is an industry leader and Chief Executive Officer of General Atomics.
  • The company is a global leader in the specialised fields of nuclear technology and has developed state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) like the Predator, Reaper and Guardian drones.

 

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Indigenously-Developed Light Combat Helicopters

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally inducted the indigenously-developed Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) in the Indian Air Force at Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
  • LCH would be inducted into the 143 Helicopter Unit. LCH has been named as 'Prachanda'.
  • LCH has been developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). It is a state-of-the-art modern combat helicopter, primarily designed for deployment in high-altitude regions.
  • LCH is the only attack helicopter in the world which can land and take-off at an altitude of 5,000 m with a considerable load of weapons and fuel.
  • LCH can perform a range of roles, including combat search and rescue, destruction of enemy air defence and counter-insurgency operations.

World Habitat Day

  • World Habitat Day is celebrated every year on 03 October.

  • The day came into existence with a resolution by the UN General Assembly in 1985. The United Nations observes the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day.

  • The theme for the year 2022 is ‘Mind the Gap. Leave No One and No Place Behind’.

  • The focus of the theme is on the growing inequalities and challenges in cities and human settlements.

  • The day calls to reflect on our towns, cities, and the basic right of all to have adequate shelter. It serves as a reminder that we can shape the future of the place we live in.
